The symbolism that bandit and Li drank was symbolizing the blood brothers. Blood brothers were tradition from the Kung Fu masters' era and a bond that last forever. If they mix blood and drink, they would have same blood in their body and they would be relative.

What is the symbolism of the drink shared by Bandit and Li?
Bandit and Li are great friends, the symbolism of them sharing the blood drink is to secure their friendship.
Bandit wanted to become the closest of friends by cutting their fingers and drinking a cup of rice wine that contained each others blood. Bandit wanted to share the drink to become blood brothers. “We cut our fingers, dropped some blood into a cup of rice wine and shared the same drink together. We then made up a poem. The rhythm and the sounds of the words were beautiful; we worked on it for over an hour.” Pg.163 – It was a hard choice for Li to do this because he had never considered the best way to be a good brother.
