We see the first seeds of Li’s later critical view of the communist regime in this chapter. What is it Li sees that leads him to these thoughts?

Li thought to himself, that if China was a rich country, why was his family so poor, and didn't have enough food to eat. He did not blame Chairman Mao but however, he did think it was all the chinese imperial corruption, foreign invasion or Chiang Kaishek's Guomindang regime.

On Li's trip to the famous Ming Tombs he had never seen so much jewellery, gold and silver. The Emperor's and Empress's drinking goblets, costumes and crowns he though how rich the history was he felt very proud. He thought was the happiest and richest place on the planet. however he started to wonder if china was such a rich country why did his family have not enough food to eat. He didn't blame Chairman Mao . he thought it was a Chinese imperial corruption or Chiang Kaishek's Guomindang regime was to blame. He thinks that Chairman Mao would bring prosperity and happiness to the Chinese people.
